Many people have heard about being ASE certified, but not everyone knows exactly what that means. For starters, “ASE” stands for National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. ASE was established to make your automotive technicians better. Since 1972 this non-profit organization has been certifying hard working people to ensure you’re getting the best service possible. 

 

ASE has a very strict set of requirements as to how one gets certified. Before allowed to do the training, they must have either 2 years of on-the-job training or 1 year of on-the-job training and a 2-year degree in automotive repair. So right away you know that your ASE-certified technician has valuable experience even BEFORE the training. Once they are eligible to get certified based on those requirements they then must pass the ASE exam. This exam is NOT easy. Only two out of three people pass the exam on the first attempt. Once they pass they are now ASE certified, but to keep up with the changes in the automotive industry, they must retake the exam once every 5 years to stay certified.
